The Shallows is a unique and innovate look into the world of one of our greatest fears at sea, Sharks. The Shallows Stars Blake Lively as Nancy Adams. The movie begins with Nancy trying to find a hidden beach in Mexico. This is a special beach to Nancy because its where her mother first found out she’s was pregnant with Nancy in 1991. This is a hard time for Nancy as she’s just lost her mother to Cancer. Nancy has also dropped out of medical school in hopes to find herself. Riddled in depression and grief Nancy needed this vacation to figure out where she’s going in life. Just like her mother Nancy shares her love for surfing. While surfing Nancy meets two islander that tell her what to watch out for. Nancy is having the time of her life until she swims in to a dead whale. This dead whale means she’s stumbled on to the feeding grounds of a Great White Shark. Nancy try to surf away , but the shark knocks her off her surfing board and bites her in her leg. Nancy’s only hope for survival is to swim to a rock which is in the shallow part of this beach (during low tide) . Nancy finally reaches the rock and is safe for now. Nancy not only has to worry about this huge shark , but also the huge gash in her leg. Thank God Nancy went Medical school as she patches up her wound using her neckless to stitch the gash in her leg up . Even though the shark can’t get to her , she is still stuck in the middle of this island with no help in site. Nancy also faces serval other major issues such as getting proper treatment for her leg before gang green sets in. Nancy also has to worry about when the high tide comes in she will no longer be safe on the rock as it will be submerged in water. As a day slowly passes by Nancy is not only in pain from her leg , but sever dehydration from lack of water and food. Then she gets a glimmer of hope as she sees the two islanders she met previously the day before. She tries to scream and warn them, but its to late as the shark kills them both. With time dwelling down before (High Tide) Nancy comes up with a plan that will hopefully save her life. Nancy starts to time the shark to see how long it takes him to get to around the beach. Nancy figures it takes him 30 seconds to swim back and fourth. She must now swim to the buoy 30 yards away before high tide. But, Nancy knows she’ll need some sort of distraction in order to out swim a shark. Nancy remembers what the 2 islanders told her about the jellyfish , so Nancy uses this knowledge to her advantage. As the high tide comes in Nancy jumps off the rock and dives deep between the jellyfish getting shocked serval times in the process. As the shark is right on her heels Nancy makes it through the jellyfish and on to the buoy just as the shark is inches away from bitting her. Now on the buoy Nancy must break into the buoy’s steel box in order to get the flair gun , so she can signal for help from passing ship. As Nancy finally gets to the flair gun , its to late as the ship passes by and Nancy’s final hope for survival goes with it. The shark has now began ramming the buoy to knock it in to the water. Nancy has two choices she can either give up or go out with a fight. She like her mother decides to fight and she starts shooting the shark with the flair gun. The spark from the flair gun ignites with the oil from the killed Whale and lights the shark on fire. The shark then gives the buoy a final ram knocking it in to the water, where the shark slowly starts biting through the metal to get to Nancy. The shark then gets caught in the buoy and Nancy moves out the way. With these few seconds she tries to detach the final part of the buoy that is still a float. With seconds left before the shark is freed Nancy detaches the last piece and this pulls her deep into the ocean. The shark inches away from Nancy as the both fly to the bottom of the ocean. As the buoy hits the ocean floor Nancy lets go right before impact and moves to the left as the shark swims right by her and into the sharp steel of the buoy. This of course kills the shark instantly and finally Nancy is free.
I was totally blown away by how good this movie was. This movie has entered my sleeper movie of the summer list. What mean by sleeper movie is, this movie won’t put up huge box office numbers but it’s a movie a lot of people are missing out on. I’ve always liked Blake Lively and i’m glad to see her in a good role. The camera work and cinematography in this movie is just beautiful. I love the way how they shot this small beach in Tijuana , Mexico. Even though this movie hasn’t put up huge summer numbers its still making money. The budget for this movie was set around 17 million to date “ The Shallows “ has grossed 47 million here in the U.S alone. This is before its international release of course. So you could say things are looking up for this movie money making potential. If I had to rate this movie it would get 9.5/ 10.
