The man that brought you classics such as Kill Bill , Inglorious Bastards and Pulp-Fiction to name a few is back with his 8th film, The Hateful 8. The movie starts off with John Ruth a bounty hunter (Kurt Russell ) aka “The Hangman” who is transporting a fugitive by the name of Daisy Domergue ( Jennifer Jason Leigh) to a small town in Wyoming called Red Rock . Everything is going smoothly until they encounter a stranger in the middle of the road. This stranger happens to be a fellow bounty hunter by the name of Major Marquis Warren ( Samuel L. Jackson) aka ” The Bounty Hunter”. Marquis horse dies which leaves him stranded in the middle of the woods. Marquis is also traveling to the Red Rock as well as John to bring his dead bounties in. After the two exchange pleasantries , John allows Marquis to ride to Redwood. Not to long after Marquis joins Daisy and John they are bombarded by another abandon stranger on the road. Of course this stranger is heading to the same town, but unlike the others he is the new sheriff of Red Rock. His name is Chris Mannix ( Walton Goggins) aka ” The Sheriff”. After a few slick comments Chris weasels his way into carriage. John , Daisy , Marquis and Chris are forced to pull over into a small cabin ” Minnie’s Haberdashery” because of the incoming Blizzard. As the group invades Minnie’s they aren’t the only ones there, an array of colorful characters awaits them.
They are firstly greeted by BOB ( Demian Bichir) aka ” The Mexican”. Bob is Minnie’s help and he tells the crew Minnie’s has left to go visit family in the mountain’s for a week. Marquis becomes very suspicious of Bob as soon as he enters Minnie’s . As the group settles in they are slowly introduced to the rest of the people in the cabin. Oswaldo Mobray aka “The Little Man”( Tim Roth) is also on the way to Red Rock. John and Oswaldo have one thing in common. Oswaldo is on his way Red Rock to perform an execution by his trade of choice hangings. That of course is music to John aka The Hangman’s ears. Next is Joe Gage (Michael Madsen) aka ” The Cow Puncher”. Joe just like Oswaldo was heading to Red Rock before the storm hit. Joe says he’s going to Red Rock to visit his mother for Christmas. John immediately finds Joe very suspicious. He doesn’t believe Joe is just heading home to see his mother for the holidays. Last, but certainly not least is General Sandy Smithers (Bruce Dern) aka “The Confederate”. Unlike everyone else he’s headed to a town past Red Rock , but is detoured to Minnie’s. The General catches the eyes of two people as soon as they enter Minnie’s. Chris knows The General as a war hero in the Civil War and immediately showers him with praises. Marquis on the other hand hates and despises The General. The two shared a battle field together and they weren’t on the same side. Things get interesting when John and Marquis converse. They know something isn’t sitting right with all these strangers and how they coincidently ended up in the same cabin and all going to the same place. Oh and did I forget to mention there’s a 10,000 dollar bounty on the head of John’s prisoner Daisy? With this in mind Marquis and John team up to find out who’s really who they say they are. The events that follow can best be described as Quinten Tarantion’s sick and twisted Midwestern version of the popular board game ” Clue”.
All I can say about this movie is WOW!!! Quinten once again delivers big with another cult classic. There are so many things I have to talked about in this historic film. This film features things we just aren’t use to seeing in today’s age and time. To have an overture, intermission and be shot on 70 MM is pretty much unheard of in this generation of film making. Now, some of you might not know what some of these terms are and why they are so significant in this movie. First lets touch on what 70MM is. For Hateful 8 Quinten used Ultra Panavision 70 refers to the very rare and exceptional format used to shoot this movie. Panavision’s unique anamorphic camera lenses captures images of 70 MM (mill meter) film in an aspect ratio of 2:76:1. Most films today are shot in 1:85:1 or 2.39:1 or simply put Ultra Panavision provides an amazingly wider and more detailed picture image. There are literally a handful of films that have used this same format. Film such as Ben-Hur , Mutiny on the Bounty , Its a mad , mad, mad, mad world , Battle of the Bulge and in 1966 Khartoum ( last movie to be shot in this format). This movie is a Western that also features an overture. What is an overture you might ask? an overture is used to present the credits, or underscored scenes that are already part of the plot. Often, but not necessarily, these films also include an entr’acte and exit music (after the credits). This gave the movie a true western fill, you literally feel like you’re in the 1950’s at the movies. Lastly to have an intermission, I mean seriously when was the last time if ever have you had an intermission at a movie? This was just sheer genius of Quinten. Most movies aren’t 3 hours long nowadays, but to have an intermission in this movie was well needed. It allows you to catch your breath and digest the 1st half of the movie. Not to mention a much needed bathroom break haha.
Now that’s out that way I can actually talk about the film. This movie to me has moved to 2nd place in my all time Quinten Tarantion films. They’re are few writer / directors that can construct a movie to this magnitude. This movie literally takes places in 2 places a stagecoach and a cabin, that’s it. If you’ve followed or seen any of his pervious movies you’d know he’s all about scenery and shot locations. To have a movie shot in basically two places and still remain entertaining is a hard feat to pull of from any writer or director. But, that’s what sets Quinten apart from everyone else his story telling and dialogue is like nothing else. Keep in mind this is a post Civil War movie, so racism is at the for front of this movie. A large number of racial tension is aimed towards Marquis, a former African American solider in the Civil war. One of the main things I like about Quinten is how he tackles racism in this movie. He’s been under fire for some of the racial themes in this movie. I think people fail to realize Quinten’s genius. Post Civil War wasn’t a great time in the black supremacy area. African American’s were treated like dirt. Thus, the dialogue in this movie. They use words such as Nigger, Nigga, Blackie and Boy. This was how they really spoke back then, so why would Quinten water down the truth in his dialogue? Samuel L Jackson was the best person he could have picked for this role. He was hands down the star of the movie and didn’t let anyone man, woman or child disrespect him black or white. One of the more awful themes in this movie besides racism was the mistreatment of women. Daisy was just treated like a slave the whole movie. John would repeated elbow her , slap her punch throughout the movie. You started to really feel sorry for this woman and ask yourself damn. What did she do to deserve this punishment and was it warranted ? Not to give anything away but, Daisy gets rightly what she deserves. She’s not the innocent victim she portrays herself to be, you learn that latter in the film.
All in all this was an awesome movie that I highly recommend people to go see. I’ve never seen a 3 hour movie where the time just went by like minutes. That’s how great the storytelling and script is in this movie. Keep in mind it’s not as fast passed as Quinten’s other movies. So if you’re looking for all out shooting scenes through out the movie, its not gonna happen quickly. But, trust me Quinten delivers big when they do appear.

While racing toward the town of Red Rock in post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive prisoner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) encounter another bounty hunter (Samuel L. Jackson) and a man (Walton Goggins) who claims to be a sheriff. Hoping to find shelter from a blizzard, the group travels to a stagecoach stopover located on a mountain pass. There, they encounter four strangers, and soon learn that they may not make it to their destination after all.
